Scrap, including obsolete military equipment, is cut up for smelting. Includes views of steel plants in operation. Donald Nelson, General L. D. Clay, and Admiral E. L. Cochrane speak on the value of scrap. The invasion fleet sails for Italy. A naval barrage precedes the landing. Germans build and man coastal defenses. German and U.S. artillery exchange fire.

Lucius DuBignon Clay (1897-1978) was born in Marietta, Georgia, the son of U.S. Senator Alexander Stephen and Sarah (Francis) Clay. After graduating from West Point in 1918, he commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. From 1937 to 1938, he was chief engineer under General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines.
